Phish has quoted this Lennon/McCartney sweetness in some rollicking places, such as “Possum” (5/13/90), “Tweezer” (12/1/94 and 8/6/96), “Taste” (dead-on at 10/27/96, and in reminiscent soloing in many ‘96-97 versions), and “Weekapaug Groove” (12/18/99) – songs about getting run over, frozen, starved, and left out. While never played in full, they gave it more than a measure or two of teases during 11/23/85, within an extended jam of “Whipping Post,” a raging roar for redemption in the midst of Mike’s “epiphany” show. But none of these six appearances were out of place: Each signaled a moment (and in a show) where the intense became soothing and the explosive became uniting, as if to ask (as the original did), “Isn’t it good?”
