Historian: Kazimierz O. Wrzeszczynski

“Not Fade Away” was co-written by Buddy Holly and Holly’s manager/producer, Norman Petty. It was first introduced by Buddy Holly’s original band The Crickets as a B-side single in 1957 and then in the following year on The Crickets’ debut album. Its signature beat and probably even more so its standard quick guitar solo has been the song’s foundation through the years. It has since evolved from a rockabilly love song into a strong rock and roll force, which now serves as a musical bond between a band and its audience. The song’s popularity has only intensified through the versions of other high-powered rock and roll acts such as The Everly BrothersThe Rolling StonesJames Taylor, and The Grateful Dead. Phish’s one and only known covering of “Not Fade Away” was performed along with The Joneses on 4/1/86 at Hunt’s as the encore for a show which featured alternating sets of the two bands.

I'm gonna tell you how it's gonna be
You're gonna give your love to me
I wanna love you night and day
You know our love not fade away

My love is bigger than a Cadillac
I try to show you but you drive me back
Your love for me has got to be real
You're gonna know just how I feel

Love is real and not fade away
Know our love not fade away
