André Roussimoff was a French professional wrestler and actor better known to the world as André the Giant, a pop culture icon for much of his life until his untimely passing in 1993. André became associated with the extended Phish community in 1999 during Trey's inaugural solo tour. "Andre the Giant" originally debuted during Trey's first tour with the three piece TAB ensemble and was played twice in May of 1999. The song structure to these renditions would later become part of Summer of '89, which Phish would debut 11 years later during their summer 2010 tour. "Andre the Giant" would later return with a completely different arrangement in Trey's next tour with the accompaniment of horns. This second composition has remained tied to the song's name to this day, appearing for a total of nine times between 2001 and 2002, and then lying dormant for 18 years, before returning during Trey's Beacon Jams series at The Beacon Theatre during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. "Andre" has appeared on two official releases, the first being 2004's Seis de Mayo studio release, which resulted in a faster-paced version, and the second part of 2007's The Lucius Beebe EP release, which was available for free to people who pre-ordered The Horseshoe Curve from Trey.com and featured the July 18, 2001 performance of the song at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO.
