Phish has performed this traditional jaunty rag tune only three times, all within one week on the fall '94 tour. The first two performances, during the second sets of 10/12/94 and 10/14/94, came out of nowhere in an acoustic setup alongside “Nellie Kane” and "Foreplay/Long Time." The third – on 10/18/94 – featured banjo accompaniment from Béla Fleck, who also lent his talents to several other songs including “Scent of a Mule,” “Lifeboy,” and “Llama.” Each version of “Beaumont Rag” was performed in a more bluegrass style than the standard, old-school rag version, though Phish was by far not the first to adapt the tune in this way. Indeed, the song is associated with Doc Watson, who performed it on 12-string guitar.
