Part of Phish’s cover of Little Feat’s Waiting for Columbus 10/31/10, this tune was originally recorded by the Fraternity of Man (as “Don’t Bogart Me”) for the soundtrack to Easy Rider. The slang in the title was coined from Humphrey Bogart’s on-screen chain smoking, and refers to holding on too long without passing. Contrarily, the timing and interplay were spot-on in Phish’s version, which was four-part harmony a cappella with several syncopation adjustments, a departure from the R&B/rock of most of the set.
Most fans probably figured “Don’t Bogart That Joint” as a one-timer, but the 2016 NYE run saw Phish open all four shows with a cappella numbers, opening the door for a surprise bustout (after 238 shows) to open the New Year’s Eve show. Now that Phish has finally shared this song again, let’s see if they continue to Bogart it in the future.
